Newcastle Hospitals is consistently one of the UK’s top-performing NHS Trusts for commercial research, excelling in trial volume, recruitment and retention, study set-up times, and data quality. This performance is underpinned by a highly experienced research delivery team and our legacy as a former Patient Recruitment Centre (PRC), which has enabled the development of robust infrastructure and expertise to deliver commercial trials rapidly and at scale.

NIHR CRDC: Newcastle provides a state-of-the-art clinical trials facility located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Our city-centre location offers excellent, integrated transport links, ensuring easy access for patients from across the wider region to our main site at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

We are also developing a multi-site delivery model across the North-East and Cumbria, working in partnership with primary and secondary care sites across Northumberland, Gateshead, County Durham, Cumbria and wider Tyne and Wear area. This approach ensures research is delivered more equitably across the region, improving access to clinical trials closer to participants’ homes. By strengthening the system-wide collaboration, we enable broader site participation, support rapid and inclusive recruitment, and ensure the benefits of research are shared beyond single centres.

Located within one of the UK’s largest teaching and research-intensive NHS Trusts, we have access to a large and socioeconomically diverse patient population across all clinical specialties, supported by state-of-the-art diagnostics.

Our wider Clinical Research Directorate employs over 430 staff, providing the expertise and capacity to enable Newcastle CRDC to deliver high-quality clinical trials to time and target, across a growing range of specialties at pace and scale.
