Multi-location (regional) delivery
Coordinated delivery across multiple organisations
Most CRDCs can support studies through multi-location delivery models, including regional networks and hub-and-spoke approaches, where multiple organisations work together to deliver a single study.
These flexible models enable studies to be delivered at scale across large geographical areas, healthcare settings and diverse populations. These models allow research to be brought to the patient, reducing the travel burden which has historically been part of commercial trial participation.
How the model works
- Research activity is coordinated across a network of participating organisations
- A lead organisation may provide overall coordination, oversight and specialist expertise, where appropriate
- Participating sites can deliver study activities across primary, secondary, specialist or community care settings
- One organisation may hold the Clinical Trial Agreement (CTA) with the study sponsor, and coordinate study delivery on behalf of the network
- Sites can undertake different study activities according to local capabilities and study requirements, and in some cases may operate as standalone delivery sites
Why this model is used
This approach supports:
- Recruitment at scale and pace
- Consistent study delivery across multiple locations
- Access to broader and more diverse patient populations, through a single contract
- Integration of research into routine care pathways
- Greater accessibility to research opportunities for patients and communities
Support from the Network
The CRDC UK Network supports sponsors to:
- Identify when a multi-location model is appropriate
- Navigate delivery across organisations
- Coordinate engagement and implementation
We provide practical support and coordination throughout, helping sponsors work through this model with confidence.
